Family Friend

The Bright House Foundation provides support and mentoring to families of children with special needs. Beginning in August of 2010, The Bright House Foundation and Shelby County School System along with participating Early Intervention agencies will start the Family Friend program. The goal of the Family Friend program is to enhance communication and understanding between families of children with special needs and the teachers and therapists who work with the child. It specifically targets the IEP process.

The Bright House Foundation “family friend” will 1) help you to get ready for the meetings, 2) attend meetings with you, 3) listen to your concerns before or after the meetings, 4) help you understand the special education process, guidelines, and terminology, and 5) just be that “family friend” that you can call when you need to talk to someone about your child’s education. With permission, your “family friend” will communicate with the early intervention and school system teachers and therapists in order to facilitate a positive relationship among all team members as well as assisting in planning the most meaningful and appropriate services for your child.

Former educators and parents of children with special needs are part of the Bright House Foundation network of people who want to help you build a strong, positive relationship with your local school in order for your child to reach his/her fullest potential. These “family friends” are knowledgeable about the special education process and may have had some of the same experiences as you. They will help you navigate more easily through the special education experience, assist all team members in recognizing your child’s special abilities, and help to communicate your hopes and concerns for your child.
